AI vs Coding for Kids: What's the Difference and Why Do Both Matter?

As Singapore strengthens AI literacy in schools, parents may wonder whether learning to code is still necessary. The answer lies in understanding how coding and AI complement each other.

AI tools can explain difficult concepts, suggest solutions and even generate code. While these capabilities can make learning easier, using AI to produce a result is not the same as understanding how it works.

For children growing up in an increasingly digital world, learning to use AI effectively starts with developing the skills to think critically, solve problems and evaluate the answers they receive.

What Does This Mean for Students in Singapore?

In March 2026, the Ministry of Education announced plans to strengthen AI literacy throughout students' education journey. The Code for Fun programme will also be updated to integrate AI skills and made available to all schools in 2027. The programme will expose students to AI, including its limitations and responsible use.

This direction highlights an important point: children need to learn not only how to use AI tools, but also how to understand and evaluate what these tools produce.

Coding and AI play different roles in this process. Coding teaches children how to break down problems and build solutions, while AI can help them explore ideas and work through challenges.

How Can Children Use AI Alongside Coding?

Imagine your child is building a game and cannot figure out why a character will not move.

Instead of asking AI to create the entire game, they could ask it to explain the coding concept involved or suggest what to check. They can then test the suggestion, identify the error and make improvements themselves.

This approach allows AI to support learning without taking over the problem-solving process.

Lyza Education’s built-in AI Tutor helps students troubleshoot coding challenges and think critically without simply giving answers.

Coding foundations make this possible. When children understand concepts such as sequences, loops and conditional statements, they are better equipped to assess AI-generated suggestions, recognise mistakes and decide whether a solution works as intended.

Without these foundations, children may struggle to understand why a generated solution works — or identify when it does not.

Helping Your Child Build the Right Foundations

Structured coding lessons can also give children opportunities to practise these skills through guided projects, with educators helping them address misunderstandings and progress at an appropriate pace.

At LYZA Education, children develop coding foundations through age-appropriate learning pathways and hands-on projects in small classes. As they build confidence in logical thinking and problem-solving, they can gain a stronger foundation for exploring AI and any other emerging technologies.

AI can help children learn, but understanding how to solve problems gives them the confidence to use it well. By learning coding alongside AI literacy, children can develop the skills to move beyond simply using technology to understanding, evaluating and creating with it.
