Inside the Lyza Classroom with Hidayah: Empowering the Next Generation of Tech Experts

Every now and then, we love to feature our dedicated educators to give parents and students a closer look at the brilliant minds shaping our classroom experiences. Today, we are spotlighting Teacher Hidayah, an educator at Lyza Education who specialises in guiding our Young Coders (Ages 7–9) through their foundational coding, AI, and STEM journeys.

Hi Hidayah! Can you introduce yourself?

Hi! I am Nur Hidayah and I am a software developer and Coding Educator at Lyza Education. I love coding, and more specifically, I love debugging and fixing code. It is so fun!

How would you describe your teaching style?

I see myself as a facilitator or a guide in class. I bring into my lessons topics that my students may be interested in at the moment. Relatable topics such as cartoons, games, sports, pets etc that they like helps them imagine how certain coding concepts work, and invokes creativity during their project work phase.

Did you know?

At Lyza Education, we do involve such elements that Hidayah mentioned. Not only we have an AI robot in Kebbi, we have also designed cute-looking images to allow students to create animations and games with Kebbi, or even having Kebbi as a virtual pet!

Coding seems like something that unlocks incredible enthusiasm, especially for young learners! When your students get highly energetic or deeply excited about building their Scratch or AI projects, how do you channel that creative energy effectively?

I absolutely agree! When my students are engaged and excited, I get excited and energised as well! One effective rule that we adhere to in class is “We love enthusiasm, but we do not love shouting”. In class, I ensure that each student will get their turn to ask and say what they are excited about, but not talk over others. My students have often responded well when given clear boundaries and assurance that their voice matters. 

Not just the physical Kebbi robot, our students are also intrigued by the virtual one that we designed for Scratch!

The Kash Store is a massive hit with the kids as a reward system. From a teacher's perspective, how does this incentive structure impact their classroom engagement and motivation during tough coding challenges?

From what I can see, my students definitely get excited about Kash and the opportunity to redeem them for the items in the Kash Store. They get happy when they see the amount increase after each lesson. I believe they may be considering the Kash rewards to some extent, but they seem to be engaged more due to their own intrinsic motivations. Which is great for their long term learning experience with coding!

Kash has been a big hit for our students. Some parents have also said that it is also a good indirect method of allowing their child to learn about saving up for the more premium items in the store, and calculating money, critical skills in today’s world.
