Scratch Classes for Kids: Why School Lessons Are Just the Beginning

A common question we hear is: "My child has already learnt Scratch in school. Shouldn't they move on to Python instead?"
It's a reasonable question, but the answer often surprises parents.
While many schools introduce students to Scratch, these lessons are designed to provide an introduction to coding, not to explore everything Scratch has to offer.
Just like learning the alphabet is only the first step towards reading, learning the basics of Scratch is only the beginning of a child's coding journey.
Scratch Is More Than Colourful Coding Blocks
At first glance, Scratch looks simple.
Children drag and drop colourful coding blocks to make characters move, create animations or build games. Because it doesn't require typing code, some parents assume
it's too basic once children have completed an introductory lesson in school.

In reality, Scratch teaches some of the most important coding concepts that children will continue using as they progress.
As they build more advanced projects, students learn sequencing, loops, conditionals, variables, events and logical thinking — all of which form the foundation for future programming languages.
The platform may look playful, but the thinking behind it is anything but simple.
The Foundations Matter More Than Speed
Many parents naturally wonder if their child should move on to Python as soon as possible.
However, progressing too quickly without strengthening the basics can make learning more difficult later on.
Think of it like Mathematics. Before learning algebra, children first need to be confident with addition, subtraction and multiplication. The same principle applies to coding.
Children who spend more time strengthening their Scratch skills often find it much easier to transition to text-based programming because they've already developed the logical thinking behind the code.
The Same Concepts Continue into Python and App Development
One of the biggest misconceptions about Scratch is that children "leave it behind" once they move on.
In fact, many of the coding concepts they learn in Scratch appear again in languages like Python and platforms like MIT App Inventor.
Loops are still loops. Conditional statements still decide what happens next. The way they're written may look different, but the logic remains the same.

That's why continuing to build on these foundations is so valuable. Rather than starting from scratch each time they learn a new language, children carry their understanding with them as they progress.
