Since launching the Coder of the Term (CoTT) award in 2024 Term 3, we have celebrated young innovators demonstrating exceptional computational thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity.

As one of Lyza Education's pilot partners, students from The Kidz Club (TKC) across various locations in Singapore have consistently been standout achievers. Alysha follows previous CoTT winners Kylie, Sherine, and Zahra, continuing a inspiring streak of young female coders breaking barriers in tech (#GirlsWhoCode).

Since our collaboration with TKC since June 2024, we have since imparted to many students coding and AI knowledge, both boys and girls

In this feature, we sit down with Alysha to discuss her learning journey, her passion for problem-solving, and her aspirations for the future.

Hi Alysha, can you introduce yourself?

Hi! I am Alysha and I am 9 years old, turning 10 this year! I have been learning to code since this year.

Have you been enjoying coding? What do you like most about it?

Yes! I get to be creative and create different kinds of projects on both CodeLab and Scratch.

What are your hobbies aside from coding?

Aside from coding, I am quite outgoing. I enjoy doing fitness training, football, running and break dancing.

Teacher Fairus shared that you are very passionate about coding and remarkably patient for your age. How do these traits help you when you code?

I am in a class with many younger students, hence I occasionally do find them slow in coding and they can be easily distracted. However, I remind myself to be patient and I try to help them while I can.

What is your coding aspiration for the future?

I want to learn about Cybersecurity. It sounds cool to learn about hacking!

Why Patience and Grit Matter in Early Computer Science

Fairus’ observation of Alysha highlights a fundamental truth about learning to code: computational thinking is as much about mindset as it is about technical skill.

Skill

How Alysha applies the skill while coding in Scratch

Real-World Application

Patience & Debugging

Analysing why a piece of code does not work in Scratch, either with teachers or our AI tutor feature

Software testing, engineering problem-solving

Grit & Resilience

Testing multiple times to ensure that codes work properly

Project management to ensure that program is bug-free

Creative Logic

Combining loops, conditions and other coding concepts to formulate a creative project

User Experience (UX) design

By rewarding effort, patience, and logic through the Coder of the Term initiative, we aim to nurture confident, resilient learners ready to tackle future technological challenges.

Empower Your Child to Become the Next Coder of the Term!

Whether your child is taking their first steps in block coding or preparing to build complex AI sequences, we provide the structured guidance, tools, and mentorship to help them thrive.
